Import and release of nutrients during the first five years of plant litter decomposition

During the initial stages of leaf and needle litter decomposition, microorganisms face nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P) scarcity since plant is very N- P-poor compared to microbial biomass. The processes that use cope with unfavorable stoichiometry, such as transport nutrients into decomposing litter, are still not fully understood. aim study was explore import release (N, P, K, Mn, Ca, Mg) from Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst) Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) litter. For this purpose, we conducted a paired-stand litterbag at eight temperate boreal forest sites in Sweden each have stand, over period five years. mass N increased during first 172 356 days, on average by 19% 30%, respectively, masses element P 526 days 48%. In contrast, Mg were released right beginning decomposition process. results show quantitatively important process coniferous forests stage when concentrations low. Nutrient alleviates stoichiometric imbalance between biomass likely contributes nutrient acquisition.
